Rangers trade Brett Berard to the Canadiens as the Islanders re-sign Tony DeAngelo
On Friday, the New York Rangers traded forward Brett Berard to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for defenseman William Trudeau, marking the first offseason move for New York.
Berard sought a "change of scenery" after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, according to the New York Post. The forward was originally drafted by Jeff Gorton, now the Canadiens' executive vice president of hockey operations.
While Berard has played 48 NHL games, Trudeau has logged 260 AHL contests with the Laval Rocket since being drafted by Montreal in 2021.
In other league activity, the New York Islanders re-signed defenseman Tony DeAngelo to a two-year contract worth $9 million. DeAngelo, 30, returns to Long Island for a second full season.
Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes continues to pursue roster upgrades. The team recently attempted to acquire Bo Horvat and Mathew Barzal from the Islanders, signaling an aggressive offseason strategy.
