- Scientists analyzed about 420 chemical reactions that converted CO2, NH3, and H2S into building blocks for life. Metals naturally occurring in hydrothermal vents served as excellent catalysts for these early metabolic processes.
- These two branches figured out their own ways to tackle the same problems. While LUCA possessed enzymes for only about half of metabolism, the other half relied on environmental metals.
