Quesnel RCMP Officer Unable to Wear Duty Belt Denied Disability Benefits
The panel agreed the officer’s gear caused pain but found insufficient evidence that his perforated diverticulosis was linked to RCMP service.
The Veterans Review and Appeal Board upheld a 2019 Veterans Affairs Canada decision denying disability benefits to a 50-year-old RCMP officer following a severe abdominal injury requiring surgery.
While working for the Quesnel RCMP in 2016, the officer developed severe abdominal pain and distention, leading to a diagnosis of Perforated Diverticulosis.
After a CT scan revealed a large intestine perforation, the officer underwent two emergency surgeries, used a colostomy bag for four months, and completed a reversal procedure.
Although the Appeal Board acknowledged that physical activity and duty gear caused the officer discomfort, it concluded there was insufficient evidence linking the condition to his service.
Currently, the officer is on a gradual return-to-work plan with limited hours, noting that a possible hernia remains a concern if he returns to full duty.
