Five Rare Lion Cubs Born at Zoo Hailed as Conservation Win
The cubs are the zoo’s third litter in a year, and keepers are using a hidden webcam to monitor the family’s progress.
Whipsande Zoo's lion pride reached 11 members, the largest in history, following the arrival of a new litter of cubs to five-year-old lioness Waka and four-year-old dad Malik.
These newborns represent the third litter to arrive at the zoo, joining previous offspring from the breeding program that strengthened the pride's genetic diversity.
All five cubs are feeding peacefully alongside mother Waka and aunt Winta, while Waka remains attentive, ensuring the cubs are fed and clean.
Predator team leader Steve Merrick-White called the births "fantastic," noting that staff monitor the cubs' development via a hidden webcam at the zoo.
The cubs' arrival marks a significant milestone for the conservation breeding program, ensuring the future of their species while expanding the pride's social structure.
