Punjab: Two Arrested for Allegedly Spreading Rumours of Girls Missing From University Hostel
Police said 20 people have been named in three FIRs as raids continue across several states to trace those linked to the campus violence.
- On Friday, police apprehended nine individuals including seven LPU students in connection with violence at Lovely Professional University in Phagwara, with arrests based on CCTV footage, technical analysis and social media evidence, DIG Jalandhar Range Naveen Singla said.
- The violence stemmed from a viral social media post on September 26 claiming a girl had been raped in an LPU hostel with no action taken; students blocked the New Delhi-Amritsar Highway that night and later engaged in stone-pelting, looting and arson.
- Among those arrested are seven LPU students and two outsiders from multiple states; social media influencer Mohammad Farhat was nominated for allegedly causing damage in videos, while a minor from Himachal Pradesh's Mandi was apprehended after his photograph on a decommissioned MiG aircraft circulated online.
- A Special Investigation Team was constituted to conduct ongoing investigations as LPU suspended classes for 10 days, prompting students to leave campus; three arrested individuals were remanded to three-day police custody Friday.
- Police have identified 20 people in LPU cases with remaining arrests planned across multiple states; separately, two individuals were arrested for spreading false rumors about student suicides at Chitkara University, Patiala district, with 10 more nominated.
