Publix Now Allows Open Carry in Florida Stores. Here’s Why

On Oct. 8, reporting by the Orlando Sentinel and South Florida Sun-Sentinel found Publix Supermarkets is now allowing Florida customers to openly carry guns, many employees say, across more than 900 stores.
An appeals court panel found Florida's ban on open carry unconstitutional, and Florida law now allows private businesses discretion to permit or prohibit open carry.
Reporters called a dozen Publix locations in Central and South Florida and got mostly the same confirmation that open carry is allowed, while managers in Davie, Miramar and Fort Lauderdale said their stores follow Florida law.
Other retailers responded by saying Walmart, Winn-Dixie and Sam's Club continue banning open carry, while Southeastern Grocers urged customers to secure firearms and Publix officials will call law enforcement if threats arise.
Lawmakers now face conflicting laws and legal gray areas to sort out, while private property owners can still ban firearms and state restrictions remain for people under age 21, convicted felons, and those with restraining orders.
