Public trust in Canada’s institutions is rising in face of U.S. hostility: poll
Trust in Canadian institutions rose to multi-year highs, with 58% trusting the electoral system and 57% trusting charities, amid backlash over U.S. protectionist policies, polls show.
On Feb. 24, 2026, a Nanos Research poll found more than 75 per cent of Canadians dispute that the United States is a trustworthy ally, based on survey data from Jan. 31 to Feb. 4, sampled 1,009 respondents.
Amid protectionist moves and threats, Canadian sentiment shifted after the U.S. President publicly belittled Canada as 'the 51st state' and imposed tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos.
Respondents also indicated more than 75 per cent boycotted U.S. products and more than 51 per cent cancelled U.S. travel, with one in five believing an invasion is likely, and 67 per cent highly concerned about security threats.
The CanTrust Index of 1,501 Canadians shows rising trust in Canadian institutions, with over 50 per cent trusting the military, RCMP, and health-care system.
Despite rising distrust, Canada remains tied to the U.S. through NORAD and NATO, while pollsters warn 'If geography is destiny, we're hostage' amid shifting relations.
