Public to decide asylum cases as Mahmood pledges to speed up decisions
The new body will use trained adjudicators and a single appeals route to speed decisions and support the removal of 45,000 people.
- Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will introduce the Immigration and Asylum Bill this week, establishing an Independent Immigration Appeals Authority to manage asylum claims starting in late 2027.
- Citing an "overwhelmed" appeals tribunal, the Home Secretary said some individuals lodge "vexatious appeals" to frustrate removal, prompting reforms to ensure legitimate claims are heard while facilitating swift removal.
- Adjudicators in the Independent Immigration Appeals Authority will be "professionally trained and independently appointed," similar to magistrates, while legislation creates a "single route" preventing further claims before removal.
- Expansions to removal centers in Gosport and Oxfordshire will facilitate the removal of 45,000 failed claimants, with capacity at Haslar increasing to 600 beds and Campsfield to 400.
- The Government expects these reforms to speed outcomes by broadening eligibility criteria, aiming to establish a more efficient system for managing immigration enforcement and processing backlogs.
