'We Need Your Help': Smithsonian National Zoo Institute Asks for Help Naming Baby Red Panda
The cub has shown bold behavior as keepers narrow the choice to Dolly, Pyra and Dolpa.
The Smithsonian National Zoo Institute is asking the public to vote on a name for a female red panda cub born in June at its conservation campus in Front Royal, Virginia.
In June, parents Keahi and Rocket welcomed the cub at the Conservation Biology Institute, just days after two other cubs arrived on May 29 at the same facility.
Keepers noted the cub has "distinguished herself with bold and feisty behavior." Staff provided air-conditioned indoor spaces and elevated nest boxes to support the relatively inexperienced mothers.
The three potential names include Dolly, inspired by Dolly Parton; Pyra, meaning "heat" in Greek; and Dolpa, a region in Nepal where wild red pandas live.
Interested individuals can visit the Smithsonian's voting form to cast their choice, inviting panda lovers across the nation to participate in selecting the cub's official name.
