Public health agency says World Cup poses high risk of measles spread
The Public Health Agency of Canada warned of a high risk of measles spread during the FIFA World Cup in Toronto and Vancouver next month.
The agency assessed 14 infectious diseases, including avian and swine flu, mpox, Ebola virus, poliovirus, and measles, for potential import during the games.
Measles is the top concern due to its global prevalence and airborne transmission, especially after Canada lost its measles elimination status last year.
Mpox poses a moderate risk as it requires close contact for transmission.
