PTA warns of internet disruptions

PTA said traffic was rerouted through alternate links while repairs were completed and services returned to full capacity.

  • Internet services across Pakistan fully returned to normal on Friday, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority confirmed, following successful repair of a fault in the SEA-ME-WE 5 international submarine cable system.
  • On Thursday, the PTA alerted users to potential connectivity slowdowns caused by the SMW5 fault, while engineers efficiently rerouted internet traffic through alternative international links to maintain service continuity.
  • Transworld Associates communicated with customers via SMS regarding a "technical fault" in the submarine cable, as the telecom regulator coordinated closely with the company to expedite repairs.
  • To enhance future resilience, Pakistan integrated the South-East Asia–Middle East–Western Europe 6 cable in November, which features "more fibre pairs and more than double the capacity" of previous systems.
  • The PTA will continue monitoring international connectivity infrastructure to strengthen resilience and prevent future disruptions in broadband and telecommunications services throughout Pakistan.
