Province fires contractor building new school in Parry Sound
Minister Calandra ended the $54.8 million contract due to delays, defective work, and liens; the project aims to open a new school in September 2026.
- On Wednesday, Ontario's Education Minister Paul Calandra terminated the NNDSB's contract with the general contractor for the Parry Sound JK-12 School and Child Care Facility, with the notice issued today on the NNDSB website.
- Van Horne Construction LTD, which won the 2023 bid for $54.8 million, was cited by the Near North District School Board for schedule issues, poor performance, and numerous liens raising concerns about September completion.
- After more than a decade of planning, the Near North District School Board told Parry Sound students one week before classes they would start virtually, with an in-person return on Sept. 15.
- To limit further delay, the minister directed the board to secure a new contractor and said he will ensure strong oversight while NNDSB remains committed to opening the school in September 2026.
- The board said the cancellation was a last resort to protect students and families, citing serious concerns about progress; BayToday has reached out to the company for comment and is awaiting a response.
