Protesters storm key energy complex in Libya during demonstrations over power outages
Security forces said gas supplies resumed after protesters shut lines at the Mellitah complex, which NOC warned could trigger a nationwide blackout.
- On Monday, protesters stormed the Mellitah Oil complex west of Tripoli, shutting down gas lines supplying power plants. Officials warned Tuesday the disruption could trigger a nationwide blackout.
- Demonstrators across western Libya, including in Zawiya, Tripoli, and Misrata, have protested for days over ongoing power outages. They demand better services and the resignation of the Government led by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.
- The General Electricity Company reported the closure halted production at the Feel field and partially stopped Wafa operations. NOC said it was following with deep concern "serious developments resulting from the storming and closure of the complex."
- Security forces regained control of the Mellitah complex, a joint venture between NOC and Italy's Eni, on Tuesday. The Libyan Government confirmed gas supplies to power generation plants have resumed.
- Libyan oil output has faced repeated closures for political and technical reasons since the 2011 uprising against Muammar Gaddafi. The country remains split between rival administrations, complicating energy infrastructure maintenance.
