Protesters Rally as President Trump Visits Syracuse
About 2,500 attended the rally and about 2,500 protested nearby, while police arrested two people and removed four others, officials said.
On Friday, President Donald Trump held a rally at the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center in Syracuse, drawing 5,000 attendees for his midterm election campaign. Trump last campaigned in the city during the 2016 presidential primaries.
Trump used the rally to endorse Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman for the 2026 midterm elections. During his remarks, Trump stated "we'd all be lucky to have him" as the next governor of New York.
Simultaneously, protesters gathered at Clinton Square to express opposition to the president's policies. Organizer Judy Jerome described the event as a stand against "the corruption of this particular administration," while others cited concerns regarding immigration and environmental protection.
During the event, venue staff removed four protesters from the convention center, while Syracuse Police Department arrested two people in connection with the visit. One was arrested for jumping a barricade; the other for unlawfully selling merchandise.
Demonstrators at Clinton Square marched near the Oncenter, reflecting the ongoing political divide in New York ahead of the November elections. Opposition groups emphasized their resolve to resist the administration's policies through voting.
