Ex-Husband Emerged Shoeless From Woods to Confess He Killed Tatjana Stefanski: Crown
Jurors were told he emerged from the woods and admitted killing her as prosecutors outlined 21 sharp-force wounds and DNA evidence.
Vitali Stefanski's second-degree murder trial opened Tuesday at Kamloops Law Courts, with the defendant pleading not guilty on Monday; Crown prosecutors will present their case in less than three weeks.
Tatjana Stefanski, 44, was last seen April 13, 2024, at her Highway 6 home in Lumby, about 25 kilometres east of Vernon in the B.C. Interior, after visiting with Vitali on her driveway; she was reported missing by her daughter.
Prosecutors presented evidence that a pathologist will testify 21 sharp-force wounds were found on Tatjana's body, with seven stab wounds to her chest causing fatal damage to her lungs and heart; a bloody knife nearby contained DNA from both Tatjana and Vitali.
Tatjana's body was found April 14, 2024, halfway down a forest road embankment near Mable Lake; Vitali emerged shoeless from woods about six kilometres away and allegedly told Mounties 'Yes, I have killed her.'
Security footage from a storage unit facility will show two figures entering a black car, while Tatjana was last seen walking toward Vitali's vehicle, which police found with her blood on multiple seats.
