The Ministry of Transport and Communications is promising new restrictions for electric scooter drivers in Lithuania. As Minister Juras Taminskas presented on Monday, the changes were prompted by the growing number of accidents involving micromobility vehicles and the number of people injured in them.
The Lithuanian Ministry of Transport has proposed raising the minimum age for scooter use to 18 and requiring all scooters to be registered, following an increase in injuries from scooter accidents. According to the proposal, those with certificates would be able to use scooters from the age of 16, fines would increase to €450-900, and 185 people were injured this year, 95 of whom were minors.
Transport Minister Juras Taminskas proposes to allow electric scooters and other micromobility vehicles to be used only by those aged 18 and over, to introduce mandatory registration, to increase fines for violations, and to prohibit riding on sidewalks and pedestrian paths.
In order to reduce the risk posed by electric scooters to traffic safety, it is planned to limit the age of their drivers, introduce mandatory registration of micromobility vehicles, and increase fines for violations, says Minister of Transport and Communications Juras Taminskas.
