Private AI gathering to be hosted by King Charles: report
The private meeting will bring about 30 AI figures together as King Charles seeks to hear concerns and spur debate on the technology.
King Charles III will host roughly 30 leaders in the artificial intelligence world at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland, this month to encourage debate on the technology's rapid development and societal relevance.
Attendees include Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang, Google DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis, and Vatican adviser Paolo Benanti; a royal official told Politico the King will "convene, engage, listen and encourage debate."
Critics argue the event highlights hypocrisy, citing the environmental toll of power-hungry data centers; Graham Smith, CEO of Republic, questioned whether Charles will challenge industry figures on sustainability.
Scotland faces scrutiny over AI infrastructure, with planned data centers in Larbert attracting 7,000 objections and warnings of a "significant impact" on the River Tweed. The Scottish Government recently mandated Environmental Impact Assessments for developments exceeding 50 megawatts.
Psychiatrist Josef Witt-Doerring recently warned that relying on AI chatbots for companionship can be unhealthy, particularly for the social development of children, highlighting broader societal risks beyond environmental concerns.
