Prince William opens new Birmingham centre to help men in crisis
On Monday, May 11, 2026, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales opened James' Place Birmingham, a new facility offering free, rapid therapy to men in suicidal crisis during Mental Health Awareness Week.
Founded in 2008 by the parents of James Wentworth-Stanley, the charity honors their son, who died by suicide nearly 20 years ago after experiencing severe anxiety following a minor operation.
Serving around 450 men annually, the centre provides specialized, non-clinical therapy with no waiting list, typically offering initial assessments within two working days to address the root causes of suicidal crisis.
Former service-user Ben Brand, who travelled from Bedford, praised the rapid intervention, noting he received care less than 48 hours after submitting a referral, describing it as "vital, crucial, really."
Having previously opened centres in London, Liverpool, and Newcastle, The Prince of Wales expressed hope for further national expansion while urging society to "talk more about suicide" to ensure earlier intervention.
