Prime Minister Mark Carney Calls Six Federal Byelections for December
The votes will test Liberal momentum and fill six vacant seats left by MPs who resigned for provincial politics, jobs or retirement.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Mark Carney called six federal byelections for December 7, 2026, offering the Liberals a chance to bolster their thin 173-seat majority in the House of Commons.
Vacancies arose recently as MPs resigned to pursue other opportunities, including provincial politics. The affected ridings span Brantford-Brant South, Scarborough North, Yorkton-Melville, and three Quebec constituencies.
The Conservatives appointed former mayor Kevin Davis in Brantford-Brant South, bypassing local nomination contests and prompting pastor Dave Carroll to run as an independent. The Liberals selected Joy O'Donnell, president of the Chamber of Commerce Brantford-Brant.
Quebec races feature high-profile contenders: former Desjardins CEO Guy Cormier for the Liberals in Laurier-Sainte-Marie, the Bloc Quebecois nominated former International Dairy Federation director Caroline Émond, and the NDP selected epidemiologist Nima Machouf.
Candidates in Saskatchewan's Yorkton-Melville include Liberal Aaron Kienle, Conservative Nelson Pohl, and Green candidate Valerie Brooks. In Scarborough North, the Greens selected Vicki Jewt as parties finalize slates.
