CNN: Newly Released Records Detail Congressional Sexual Harassment Settlements
Newly released records show the total is more than double the amount first disclosed, after an uncounted $220,000 Alcee Hastings payment surfaced.
Newly released documents reviewed by CNN show taxpayers paid more than half a million dollars in confidential congressional sexual harassment settlements, a total significantly higher than previously disclosed.
The Office of Congressional Workplace Rights missed a $220,000 payment involving former Democratic Rep. Alcee Hastings, explaining to House Oversight Chair James Comer the settlement did not meet initial search criteria.
An employee filed a complaint in 2010 alleging sexual harassment by Hastings, who chaired the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe; Hastings called the allegations "ludicrous."
From January 1, 1996, through December 12, 2018, the office approved 349 awards or settlements to resolve complaints against legislative branch offices, with 80 settled by House or Senate offices.
Following policy changes in 2018 driven by the #MeToo Movement, members can no longer rely on taxpayer dollars for settlements, and The House Ethics Committee reports no new notifications since.
