Presidential adviser says Ukraine is in talks to lift speed limit on military satellite network
Ukraine says the limit is slowing drone operations and leaving interceptor drones easier to target, while talks continue with SpaceX and U.S. officials.
Ukraine is in talks with SpaceX and the Pentagon to lift a speed cap on its Starshield satellite service, imposed without warning early Thursday. The restriction limits internet data for terminals moving faster than 160 kph , hindering military drone operations.
Defense technology adviser Serhii Beskrestnov characterized the sudden restriction as a political issue rather than purely technical. Relations between Kyiv and Washington grew increasingly strained by Trump's diesel deal and intelligence-sharing breakdown.
Starshield serves as the backbone for Ukrainian drone operations essential for countering Russia's jet-powered Shahed drones, which fly at more than 400 kph . The speed cap forces drones to fly slower, making them vulnerable to Russian weapons.
President Donald Trump told reporters Friday he did not order the restriction and doubted SpaceX founder Elon Musk was responsible. Ukraine is exploring alternatives, including satellite networks from Amazon and Europe's Eutelsat.
Russia's Rassvet satellite network looms as the next technological challenge, potentially allowing Russian operators to control drones and missiles in real time. Beskrestnov warned this capability could render Ukraine's electronic-warfare jamming network ineffective.
