Slovakia Lifts Veto on New EU Energy Sanctions on Russia
BRATISLAVA REGION, SLOVAKIA, JUL 18 – Slovakia agreed to lift its veto on EU sanctions after receiving guarantees to import Russian gas until 2028, ending a key obstacle to the EU's 18th sanctions package.
- Slovakia lifted its veto on the EU’s 18th round of sanctions against Russia on the morning of July 18 in Brussels.
- Prime Minister Robert Fico blocked the sanctions for six weeks, demanding energy guarantees to keep importing Russian pipeline gas amid EU plans to end such imports by 2028.
- The sanctions include a tightened price cap on Russian oil, bans on 105 Russian tankers, two dormant Russia-Germany pipelines, visa bans, asset freezes, and a SWIFT ban on 22 Russian banks.
- Fico stated on Facebook that “all negotiation options have been exhausted” and that continuing to block the measures would harm Slovakia’s national interests, while EU officials vowed to "keep raising the costs" to end Russian aggression.
- The veto lift enabled EU ministers to adopt the sanctions, but Fico warned he might veto the next package if Slovakia’s needs are not met, reflecting ongoing tensions over energy security.
