Preparing the field for Sunday’s NFL game in Paris began months ago at an Italian farm near Milan
The surface was grown near Milan and stitched into a hybrid field to meet American football demands and support the NFL’s long-term push in France.
On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints will play at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, marking a major milestone in the National Football League's 2026 international schedule.
To prepare for the matchup, the NFL installed a hybrid grass surface grown in Milan, transporting the turf via a 10-hour truck journey before stitching it into the stadium pitch about three weeks ago.
NFL field director Nick Pappas oversaw extensive site modifications, including upgrading locker rooms with 25 additional lockers and medical facilities to accommodate the visiting 53-man roster.
Jon Barker, head of international games and major events for the NFL, described the event as a long-term investment, noting the organization is opening offices in France to host future games.
Barker emphasized the goal extends beyond this single event, stating the league aims to deepen relationships with existing fans while cultivating a new supporter base in France.
