Indonesia Police Seek Four Suspects for Acid Attack on Activist
Four suspects are sought after an acid attack severely injured activist Andrie Yunus, who criticized military influence in government, police and rights groups confirmed.
- On Monday, Indonesian police said they are hunting four people wanted for an acid attack that maimed activist Andrie Yunus, deputy coordinator of the KontraS rights group, based on CCTV footage showing suspects on two scooters.
- Last week, Yunus was riding a motorbike when two men on a scooter approached and one threw acid at him, shortly after he finished recording a podcast criticizing the military's growing influence in government.
- Authorities are conducting forensic tests on a motorcycle helmet and a container allegedly used to carry the acid. KontraS representative Jane Rosalina said Yunus suffered burns to 24 per cent of his face and arms, with his most severe injury to his right eye.
- Indonesia's minister for law and human rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra vowed perpetrators would be brought to justice, while UN special rapporteur on human rights defenders Mary Lawlor called the attack "unacceptable" and demanded a thorough probe.
- Human Rights Watch said Indonesia "has undergone further democratic backsliding, crackdowns on protests, media censorship, and intimidation of activists" under President Prabowo Subianto, a pattern rights groups say the acid attack exemplifies amid international alarm.
