- On Jan 7, electricity will be restored to tens of thousands in southwest Berlin after a suspected arson attack on Jan 3 destroyed cables, cutting power to about 45,000 households and over 2,000 businesses in the longest blackout since World War II.
- Germany's domestic intelligence says self-styled Volcano Groups have been active since 2011, with Vulkangruppe claiming responsibility online and targeting the fossil fuel economy, framing the act as attacking infrastructure not people.
- Around 14,500 households were reconnected to the grid by noon on Jan 5, while Stromnetz Berlin said specialist repair crews faced challenges fixing high-tension lines and cables buried in frozen soil, leaving around 19,900 households and 850 commercial businesses offline.
- Berlin emergency services, supported by the army and charities, used public pools, hotels, schools and sports centres as shelters while Mayor Kai Wegner said, `These are not childish pranks, but rather professional criminals who attacked these power grids,` Wegner said in an interview Monday with German public broadcaster RBB.
- Politicians have demanded federal help and more investment to safeguard critical infrastructure, with the Bundestag's interior committee set to be briefed later this week as the Bundesanwaltschaft leads the investigation.
