Poundland owner plots sale of discount chain a year after takeover
Gordon Brothers is in talks to launch an auction as Poundland reports a £79 million loss and continues a major restructuring.
Gordon Brothers, the Boston-based owner of Poundland, is exploring a sale of the discount chain just over a year after acquiring it for £1, though no final decision has been made.
The investment firm purchased Poundland from Pepco Group in July 2025, subsequently implementing a High Court-approved restructuring that closed 200 shops, leaving approximately 600 stores operating across the UK.
Managing Director Barry Williams reported "significant progress" earlier this year, yet accounts show Poundland recorded a £79m pre-tax loss in the year to September 2024, with revenue falling 2.5 per cent.
Advisers are anticipated to be appointed within days to oversee the potential auction, creating uncertainty for the 12,000 people employed by Poundland nationwide.
This strategy aligns with Gordon Brothers' typical model of buying, restructuring, and selling assets, as the firm maintains a large selection of businesses frequently listed for auction or investment.
