Morrisons Cuts 4,912 Jobs as Turnaround Pressures Mount
The company said store, manufacturing and distribution roles were hit as revenue rose 2.8% and net debt climbed to £7.52 billion.
Morrisons cut 4,912 jobs in the year ending October 2025, reducing its average monthly workforce from 101,144 to 96,232 employees; more than 4,200 store roles were lost alongside manufacturing and distribution positions.
Financial filings reveal an annual pre-tax loss of £629 million before exceptional items, while net debt rose to £7.52 billion from £7.07 billion during the year ending October 2025.
Morrisons, once part of the 'Big Four' supermarkets alongside Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda, has dropped to sixth place in market share as German discounters Aldi and Lidl overtook the retailer in recent years.
Chief executive Rami Baitieh is leading a major turnaround plan, which includes closing 100 Morrisons Daily stores while citing 'government policy choices' and an 'avalanche of costs' impacting operations.
A spokesperson stated the grocer 'maintained EBITDA' and market share during 2025 despite 'tough external headwinds,' while the company remains owned by US private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice since 2021.
