Amber Warning for Herefordshire in First-Ever Pot Hole Ranking List
The UK government rated 154 local highway authorities on road condition and spending, with only 16 councils achieving the highest green rating, highlighting areas needing improvement.
- On January 11 the Department for Transport published a national map rating 154 local highway authorities red, amber or green based on road condition and spending effectiveness.
- To ensure transparency the government withheld 25% of a £500 million funding uplift until LHAs published reports, unlocking £125 million, as part of a £7.3 billion commitment last year.
- Only 16 councils achieved a green ranking, including Worcestershire, Middlesbrough, Darlington, Leeds, Manchester, Sandwell and Coventry; Transport for London received an amber rating while Waltham Forest, Kensington and Chelsea, and Greenwich scored red.
- The government said it will link future funding access to red-rated councils' performance, which will also receive 300,000 of planning and capability assistance.
- Days after a mega pothole burst the tyres of 14 cars on a Hampshire motorway slip road, Edmund King said fixing potholes is the top demand for 96% of AA members and the Pothole Partnership welcomed the government's accountability drive.
