Postal Service Releases Bald Eagle Stamps as America Soars Into Its 250th Year
The special-edition collection shows the bird through five life stages and is available for immediate purchase nationwide, officials said.
On Thursday, the United States Postal Service unveiled special edition bald eagle stamps at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota, commemorating America's 250th birthday with five life stages of the iconic bird.
Massachusetts-Based artist David Sibley spent nearly a year creating digital illustrations, focusing on intricate head detail to overcome the challenge of rendering the bird across five major life stages on a tiny stamp format.
Although the eagle has been a national emblem since Congress adopted the Great Seal in 1782, it was only designated the national bird in 2024, a distinction Postal Service historian Steve Kochersperger said reflects the country's own history.
Once threatened by 1960s pesticide poisoning, the bald eagle rebounded from endangered status after the 1972 DDT ban, and was removed from the endangered list in 2007 with more than 300,000 birds now in the continental United States.
"Hey, this is our national symbol, but they may all be gone if we don't change our ways," Kochersperger said, emphasizing how the stamps encourage awareness of the eagle's importance to the natural world and ecosystem.
