The Portuguese road fatality rate is 60 million deaths per inhabitant, more than the average of the European Union, which is 45 million deaths per person.

Portugal is one of the countries in Europe which has at least reduced the number of road accidents. Between 2023 and 2024 only a drop in the number of deaths was recorded between 0.6% and 638 to 634.
The annual report of the EESC's Road Safety Performance Index (PIN), published today, shows that Portugal recorded a decrease of 0.6% in the number of deaths in the road between 2014 and 2024, ranging from 638 to 634 deaths. Over the last decade, the number of deaths in the Portuguese streets has almost stopped, contrary to the progress recorded by most Member States of the European Union, needs the document.
