Portugal Battles to Contain Wildfires
PORTUGAL, JUL 29 – Nearly 2,700 firefighters are engaged in controlling 17 major wildfires amid extreme heat and dry conditions that have forced evacuations and caused injuries, officials said.
- Since Monday, about twenty young people have tried to save olive trees affected by a forest fire in Penamacor, with authorities fearing high temperatures could worsen conditions.
- Extreme heatwaves and weeks of dryness have set the stage for widespread wildfires, with drought-stressed vegetation becoming highly combustible, complicating containment efforts.
- Shifting from aerial to ground tactics, ground crews employ strategies after air assets halt at night, leaving firefighters without aerial backup.
- In Arouca, the fire's intensity prompted closure of the Paiva Walkways and its suspension bridge, with about 750 firefighters seeking control.
- Authorities are urging the public to remain especially vigilant as IPMA forecasts high rural fire danger will continue in coming days.
