How Switzerland's population will change in the coming years

Switzerland's population is still growing and is expected to hit 10 million in the years to come, but some parts of the country will see faster growth than others.

The federal government has presented new scenarios for population development up to 2055. They contain political explosives – from immigration to the financing of the AHV.

According to figures from the federal government, in this country the 10 million mark should be cracked 2040. In 2055 it is said to be 10.5 million.

From east to west, Switzerland measures 348 kilometres, from north to south only 220, and in total, the country is only about 41 000 square kilometres small, so it is not too difficult to figure out how to continue beyond the border.

New figures show that just under 15 years from now, a million more people live in our country than today. This also has political implications.

The population of Switzerland will increase from 9 million by the end of 2024 to 10.5 million by 2055, an increase mainly due to migration, according to the reference scenario of the Federal Statistical Office (OFS). The ageing of the population will continue.
