Poppy campaign kicks off in Penticton as Legion marks 100th anniversary
The campaign begins as the Legion marks its 100th anniversary and plans a single community Remembrance Day gathering with a parade and outdoor ceremony.
Royal Canadian Legion Branch president Elaine Potter presented Penticton Mayor Julius Bloomfield with the first poppy on Saturday, launching the annual campaign ahead of Remembrance Day.
The Legion marks its 100th anniversary as the campaign begins, raising funds for veterans' benefits and housing ahead of Remembrance Day.
Following the presentation, a moment of silence honored four Canadian Armed Forces members killed in a training exercise in Wainwright, Alta. Potter said, "It's not often we lose our military in our own country."
Community members are invited to attend a special parade down Main Street and a ceremony at 100 Main Street on Nov. 11, starting at 10:25 a.m.
Unlike past years, which featured two separate gatherings—one indoors and one outside—Penticton will hold only one community event to mark the Legion's 100th anniversary.
