Poppy campaign kicks off at Legion Branch 26 in Kelowna

Funds from the poppy campaign will support veterans and their families as poppies are distributed by donation ahead of Remembrance Day.

  • The Royal Canadian Legion held its annual poppy campaign kick-off at the Kelowna Legion on Friday, Oct. 23, with Mayor Tom Dyas and Legion president Jim White attending the breakfast event.
  • It is a Kelowna tradition to pin the first poppy over the mayor's heart; White performed this honour for Dyas, officially launching the campaign that runs until Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.
  • Poppy Chairman John Caspers told Black Press Media that funds raised support veterans and their families, emphasizing the Legion provides assistance to those in need, including homeless veterans.
  • Poppies will be available by donation around town leading up to the holiday, serving as a symbol Dyas said asks citizens to remember those who served and sacrificed.
  • The Field of Crosses, honouring names on the City Park cenotaph, will be displayed Nov. 1-12, with the annual Remembrance Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at 908 Wilson Ave.
