Pope Leo pledges gradual return to duties in first event since cancer surgery
The pontiff will await test results that could determine whether he needs chemotherapy or other treatment after the tumor was removed.
Pope Leo XIV delivered the traditional Angelus blessing at St. Peter's Square on Sunday, marking his first official appointment since returning to the Vatican on Saturday following lung cancer surgery.
The 71-year-old pontiff underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, confirming a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer.
His surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, told Vatican News there are "no clinical reasons" to preclude the Pope's upcoming travel and expects a full recovery "in another 10 days or so."
Faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square to welcome the Pope back, with visitor Marla Marsala of Michigan saying, "I am just happy that we are praying with him today instead of for him."
The Pope plans an ambitious Nov. 6-17 trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, while doctors await histological test results to determine if additional treatment such as chemotherapy or immunotherapy is necessary.
