Number in DUP Knew About Claim over Donaldson Behaviour to Woman – Poots
The party says an independent review will examine what senior figures knew after Jeffrey Donaldson was convicted of 18 sex offences, including rape.
The Democratic Unionist Party is launching an independent review into its handling of concerns regarding Jeffrey Donaldson, following revelations that party members held undisclosed information about his conduct before his 2024 arrest.
Convicted of 18 sex offenses last week, former party leader Jeffrey Donaldson abused two women when they were children, prompting widespread concern regarding his long-term conduct within the party.
Former MP Ian Paisley told a BBC investigation on Friday he informed Stormont Speaker Edwin Poots in 2021 that a woman had been exploited by Donaldson, while Poots maintains he received no criminal or safeguarding disclosures.
Sinn Fin MLA Sinad Ennis urged Poots to stand aside pending the review, citing his alleged prior knowledge of Donaldson's behavior as indicating "at best a gross misjudgement by the Speaker, at worst it is a fundamental and disastrous moral failure."
DUP leader Gavin Robinson told BBC Talkback on Tuesday he has "no reason to doubt" Poots's account while announcing an independent review, dismissing other parties' criticism as "political purpose.
