Michigan Woman Behind Bars After Admitting to Pouring Boiling Water on Teen Girl During Fight
The teen suffered third-degree burns after a fight escalated, and police say Shanell Lakeisha Cohen admitted pouring hot water on her.
Shanell Lakeisha Cohen, a 31-year-old Pontiac woman, was arraigned Thursday in 50th District Court on a felony assault charge for allegedly pouring boiling water on a 15-year-old girl during a physical altercation.
On Sunday, a confrontation on Leonard Lane in Pontiac escalated into a large brawl involving 50 to 100 people, during which investigators allege Cohen retrieved a pot of boiling water from her stove.
The teenager remains hospitalized with third-degree burns covering her neck and the majority of her back. Her mother, Lasheron Gray, said, "They were fighting, I guess she felt that a 15-year-old was beating her up and she went in the house and got boiling water."
Admitting to the act, Cohen is currently held at the Oakland County Jail on a $75,000 bond with a 10% provision. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said, "We have another sad example of a verbal dispute, escalating into dangerous physical violence."
A probable cause conference is scheduled for October 13 at 1:30 p.m., and Cohen faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the felony assault charge. Court records did not list an attorney for the defendant as of Friday.
