Prince George RCMP May Have Committed Offence in Shooting: Watchdog

FRASER-FORT GEORGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 30 – The Independent Investigations Office found reasonable grounds for charges after a 2021 shooting injured a driver during a traffic stop, referring the case to prosecutors.

  • After a multi-year inquiry, the IIO referred the case to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.
  • Just before 7:00 a.m. on May 31, 2021, police approached a man near the North Star Inn, during which gunshots were fired, resulting in a serious injury.
  • As a result, gunshots were fired by the officer during the interaction, and the driver of the vehicle suffered a serious gunshot injury.
  • To approve charges, the BC Prosecution Service requires a substantial likelihood of conviction, and with the case now belonging to the Crown, the IIO will not comment further.
  • Jessica Berglund, chief civilian director of the IIO, determined reasonable grounds exist to believe one officer may have committed an offence in relation to the use of a firearm, over four years after the investigation began.
