Three arrested over Glasgow disorder and racist assaults after Belfast knife attack
Police said three men were arrested and five people were injured as violence spread after a Belfast stabbing attack.
On Tuesday, anti-immigration demonstrations erupted in Glasgow and across Scotland, resulting in three arrests and five injuries after masked protesters targeted passers-by, following a stabbing attack in Belfast on Monday night.
Following the stabbing of 44-year-old Stephen Ogilvie in Belfast, where Hadi Alodid faces attempted murder charges, demonstrators in Scotland invoked the memory of murdered 18-year-old Henry Nowak, carrying banners declaring "White lives matter."
Police Scotland confirmed members of the public were "attacked because of the colour of their skin" during the Glasgow demonstration, while worshippers at Glasgow Central Mosque were forced to lock themselves inside as marchers surrounded the building.
First Minister John Swinney condemned the scenes as "completely unacceptable," while Scottish Green co-leader Ross Greer described those involved as "scumbags," and Health Secretary Angela Constance urged calm, stating, "Our communities don't need this level of disruption."
Assistant Chief Constable Alan Waddell stated Police Scotland has an "appropriate policing plan in place" to manage any further disorder, as officers remain stationed in local areas engaging with communities to ensure safety.
