Police say shoppers at Asda, Tesco, Morrissons and more are making a common mistake
Police and road safety experts advise reversing into parent-and-child bays to ease loading children and improve visibility, urging shoppers to report misuse to managers.
- Police Sergeant Owen Messenger teamed with George’s Car Media on TikTok to demonstrate reversing into a Tesco bay, urging drivers to adopt this safer parking method.
- He warned that when you are trying to get out, if you are nosed in and reversing into traffic, it is very difficult to see vehicles and people, and drivers must weigh convenience against safer driving, Police Sergeant Owen Messenger said.
- Designed for parents, parent-and-child parking bays are wider to aid loading pushchairs and are usually sited nearer store entrances, marked with an adult and child image, the RAC notes.
- Shoppers are being encouraged to report misuse of parent-and-child bays to store managers rather than confront users, as 'approaching somebody using a dedicated bay without young passengers could lead to a hostile situation.'
- The RAC highlights that parent-and-child bays are common in supermarkets, and a road-safety expert warned shoppers at Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons they are parking 'all wrong'.
