Police officer, 19, dies after being hit by car, while attending another collision
The 19-year-old officer was struck while responding to a separate crash, and police said a 73-year-old man was arrested and later re-bailed.
On Monday, Northumbria Police officer PC Jess Turnbull responded to a collision on the A189 near Cramlington, Northumberland, but was struck by a black Mercedes CLC and died in hospital on Wednesday.
Turnbull was attending a collision involving a Land Rover Freelander and a Ford Explorer when struck by the unconnected vehicle. Police arrested a 73-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine honored the officer, stating she made the "ultimate sacrifice" to keep the community safe. The road remained closed for more than 16 hours following the incident.
Northumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner Susan Dungworth said, "No words can ease the pain," as the force requested floral tributes be placed at headquarters in Wallsend for safety. The family has asked for privacy.
Turnbull was the first Northumbria Police officer killed on duty since 2006, when PC Joseph Carroll died in a collision. Investigators continue to appeal for witnesses to contact the force.
