Police investigating threatening 'hoax' emails sent to schools from outside the UK
Police say the emails were a hoax as more than 160 schools in Northern Ireland reported threats and some evacuated.
On Monday, October 19, schools across Northern Ireland and Scotland received threatening emails claiming explosive devices were present; the Police Service of Northern Ireland and Police Scotland are investigating the messages as a hoax.
Stormont Education Minister Paul Givan reported 160 schools in Northern Ireland were targeted, though the PSNI said up to 300 schools received the same emailed message, with communications originating outside the UK and referencing an "Islamist" motive.
While the PSNI advised schools not to close unless a specific object was identified, several institutions evacuated students and requested immediate parent pickups, causing widespread operational disruption on the first day back after October holidays.
PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said the police "understand the concern in the community" and that "risk to the public as low" at this stage; Givan condemned the "disruption caused to young people's education."
The PSNI confirmed these emails are similar to threats sent to schools across the Republic of Ireland last week, suggesting a broader, coordinated multi-jurisdictional pattern targeting educational institutions.
