Police are investigating after gasoline was poured on the memorial and a wood pile was set ablaze, causing damage but no injuries, with community members extinguishing the fire.
- On Feb. 17, Minneapolis Police Department said they received a report of a suspicious fire at the memorial around 8:45 p.m., and the fire was extinguished before officers arrived.
- Since the Jan. 7 shooting by an ICE officer, a community-curated memorial has stood on the 3300 block of Portland Avenue, drawing visitors and artwork.
- Someone doused the site with gasoline and set a pile of wood on fire, photojournalist Ryan Vizzions smelled gasoline, and neighbors used two fire extinguishers to put out the blaze.
- Police labeled the incident suspicious, canvassed for evidence and reported no arrests as of Wednesday morning; several items at the Renee Good and Alex Pretti memorials were damaged, and city officials are working on preservation and space to grieve.
