Police investigate arson attack on car outside home of Sikh independence activist
Police found a burning car and vandalized bus, and investigators say no motive has been determined after the attack on Narinder Singh Randhawa's home.
Surrey Police Service is investigating an arson attack after finding a car engulfed in flames and a vandalized bus outside the home of Sikh activist Narinder Singh Randhawa late Wednesday in the Surrey Central neighbourhood.
The RCMP previously served Randhawa with a "duty to warn" notice alerting him to credible and imminent threats to his safety, as he organizes rallies for the Khalistan movement seeking an independent Sikh state within India.
Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, lawyer for the separatist group Sikhs For Justice, called the incident a "terrorist attack" targeting the activist following a pro-Khalistan rally held earlier that day.
Major crime detectives are investigating the incident as a suspect reportedly fled the scene on foot; police are asking anyone with surveillance video from 11 p.m. to midnight to contact them.
This incident follows the 2023 assassination of Sikh community leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, which former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau linked to Indian intelligence.
