Man gets more than 16 years in prison for Islamic State knife attack on B.C. bus
The court said the 2023 stabbing was meant to advance Islamic State objectives, and prosecutors noted Kawam will serve consecutive terms.
On Thursday, Abdul Aziz Kawam received a 16-year and eight-month prison sentence from British Columbia's Supreme Court for terrorism-related offenses stemming from a 2023 knife attack.
The attack occurred on April 1, 2023, when Kawam boarded a 503 Coast Mountain transit bus in Surrey and slashed a passenger's throat, later claiming he pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
Kawam was convicted in June 2025 of attempted murder and assault with a weapon. The victim suffered vocal-cord damage during an attack that took place without warning.
George Dolhai, the service's director of public prosecutions, stated the violence aimed to cause "suspicion and fear" in public spaces, calling it "an attack on all Canadians, including Canadian Muslims."
Corporal Parmbir Kahlon of the Federal Policing Pacific Region noted that incidents of this nature have a "profound impact" on the community while emphasizing commitment to keeping public spaces safe.
