Pogacar wins opening full stage to take Tour de Romandie lead
Pogacar earned his fifth win in seven racing days and opened a seven-second lead over Florian Lipowitz in the general classification.
- On Tuesday, world champion Tadej Pogačar won Stage 1 of the Tour de Romandie, seizing the overall lead after a 171.2km ride through Switzerland's French-speaking region.
- Pogačar launched his attack halfway up the 8.9km ascent to Ovronnaz, which features a 9.8 percent average gradient, with Bahrain Victorious rider Lenny Martinez staying with him through the final 38km.
- By the finish, Jorgen Nordhagen of Visma-Lease a Bike joined the lead trio to form a quartet, marking Pogačar's fifth victory in just seven days of racing this year.
- In the general classification, Pogačar now holds a seven-second lead over Florian Lipowitz, with Lenny Martinez trailing by 16sec after the world champion easily distanced his rivals in the final sprint.
- Thursday's Stage 2 is a 173.1km run from the village of Rue to Vucherens, serving as one of two week-long stage races Pogačar is using to build toward a record-equalling fifth Tour de France title in July.
