PNP Recommends Anti-Hazing Raps vs Tab Baldwin, 10 Others
The DOJ will evaluate evidence from 320 hours of interviews after the CIDG linked the team-building to hazing and the deaths of two student-athletes.
- On Friday, June 26, the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation Detection Group recommended filing Anti-Hazing Act charges against resigned Ateneo men's basketball head coach Tab Baldwin and 10 others over the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
- Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the June 8 team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, resulted in the drowning of two individuals, with training exercises crossing into prohibited hazing under Republic Act 11053.
- Investigators interviewed around 60 respondents, revealing the activity aimed to determine which 17 of 20 participating athletes would join the final roster; Ateneo interim head coach Louis Alas testified it tested mental toughness, not basketball skills.
- The Department of Justice received the PNP-CIDG recommendation on Friday and will conduct an initial evaluation to determine if evidence warrants a preliminary investigation.
- Ateneo administrators and sponsors, including the MVP Foundation and Smart Communications, were unaware of the seawater activity, Remulla said, while the families of Baterbonia and Adili have laid their loved ones to rest.
