PM orders ethics investigation into minister over Labour Together claims
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has referred Cabinet Office minister Josh Simons to an independent ethics adviser over allegations linked to a £36,000 PR probe into journalists by Labour Together.
- On Monday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer asked his independent adviser Sir Laurie Magnus to investigate whether Josh Simons breached the ministerial code, Darren Jones told MPs.
- In 2023, Labour Together is accused of paying APCO Worldwide 36,000 to investigate journalists from The Sunday Times, The Guardian and others, producing a 58-page report.
- Sources say the APCO report included personal details of journalists and was circulated to party figures and GCHQ, which found no case to answer, Burghart said.
- More than 20 Labour MPs demanded a fully independent investigation, while Sir Laurie Magnus can only investigate ministers' conduct in office, limiting the probe's scope.
- The Chief Secretary said Sir Laurie Magnus's advice will `happen very soon` and be published, while ministers insisted the government protects press freedom and no journalist should be intimidated.
