Ethiopian PM welcomes India's Modi in Addis Ababa at start of two day visit
Prime Minister Modi was honoured with Ethiopia's highest civilian award for strengthening bilateral ties and visionary leadership, marking a milestone in India-Ethiopia cooperation.
- On December 16-17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Addis Ababa for a two-day State visit and was personally welcomed by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, who drove him to the hotel with stops at the Science Museum and Friendship Park.
- As part of a three‑nation tour, Modi timed the Ethiopia visit to deepen ties across Africa and strengthen multilateral cooperation ahead of the BRICS chairmanship on January 1, 2026.
- During a December 16 ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received The Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia at the Addis International Convention Centre, becoming the first global leader to receive it and dedicating it to the 140 crore people of India.
- Modi addressed the Ethiopian Parliament on December 17, portraying the countries as natural partners in peace and connectivity and received a standing ovation from members of Parliament.
- Both governments agreed to boost cooperation across education, transport, agriculture, health, science and AI, and Modi will travel to the Sultanate of Oman from December 17 to 18 for the final leg.
