Pilot and 2 young daughters survive the night on airplane wing after crashing into icy Alaska lake

  • On Sunday, a Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser piloted by a man with his two immediate juvenile family members aboard, crashed on the Kenai Peninsula during a recreational sightseeing tour from Soldotna to Skilak Lake after being reported overdue.
  • The area around Tustumena Lake, situated approximately 80 miles southwest of Anchorage, is known for sudden, dangerous winds due to nearby mountains and a glacier, creating chaotic and turbulent conditions.
  • A cellphone ping helped authorities narrow the search, and on Monday, Terry Godes, after seeing a Facebook post requesting help, located the partially submerged aircraft on a glacial field near Tustumena Lake with the family standing on the wing, approximately 12 hours after the crash.
  • Terry Godes stated he saw "three people on top of the wing", and Dale Eicher, upon hearing Godes' radio call, alerted troopers and provided the plane's coordinates, emphasizing that "Finding them within an hour of starting the search was very good news."
  • The Alaska National Guard rescued the pilot and two children, who were then transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the National Transportation Safety Board, in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, is investigating the cause of the crash, as there is currently no indication of what caused the plane to crash.
